Bhishma Nirvan: The Book Cover — cover

The cover

A book about a man who chose the moment of his own death — and the sky that lets us date it.

The subject

Bhishma fell on the tenth day of the Mahabharata war onto a bed of arrows, where his boon of icchamrityu — death only at a moment of his own choosing — left him suspended. He chose to wait for Uttarayana, the sun’s northward turn. Because his death is tied to a specific astronomical event, and because the text records the sky around it in unusual detail, Bhishma’s nirvana is one of the few anchors in the epic that can be tested against the actual motion of the heavens. That makes it a battleground for anyone dating the Mahabharata — and it is the passage Nilesh Oak’s book turns on.

The design

The cover was designed to carry that subject: the deathbed vigil, the turning sky, and the argument between them. This edition is the Marathi version of Oak’s much-awaited book.
